Alternative Development in Badakhshan, Afghanistan

Since 2017, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has been implementing an Alternative Development project in Badakhshan in partnership with Afghanaid. The project provided farmers an opportunity to replace illicit crop cultivation with sustainable farm and off-farm activities. As of November 2020, a total of 684 hectares - previously used for illicit poppy cultivation - have been converted for licit land uses. At the same time, farmers were able to increase and diversify their income streams.
